The Goodnight Process – The Stereo Flys
Kurt, from The Leftovers, is coming back to town again. This time with The Goodnight Process, a band that he just joined recently. They’re a power-pop band that I could imagine hearing on the radio in the not-to-distant future. Sloan, in my mind, is a good comparison band.
This tour with The Stereo Flys (Boston, MA) started out in Portland, ME, with us in mind as the furthest west point. Hopefully you’ll come out and take a listen, maybe dance a little, and bring some beer if you want some.

Time for some grime
I went to Mickey’s Tavern on Friday night with the intent of enjoying some drinks and rock ‘n’ roll. The PBR went down smooth, and added to my ‘hipster’ cred according to one of the friends there. The bands, on the other hand, were brutal. If you’ve never seen a show at Mickey’s, remember to take earplugs the first time you venture out to. Borr was a brutal two piece from Minneapolis that played second on the bill and filled the room with sound equivalent to that of a six piece post-hardcore band. United Sons of Toil were, well, United Sons. Loud and intense. They put on one of those performances that just reinforces why I’ll be going to check them out most every time they play in town.
Anyhow, the goal wasn’t just to drink and rock out. I had the camera along for the show to experiment a bit. All of the photos I took were with the f1.8 50mm lens, but attached to the end of it was a 0.35x semi-fisheye macro lens. You may see the stupidity in this, since it isn’t going to do much to my 50mm except zoom it out and add extra glass to mess up the f1.8 end of things.
The thing is, that was the exact point of this experiment. Tweak out the camera in ways that most people wouldn’t in order to obtain the most messed up results possible, and then see what I could salvage from those results… That’s why the ISO was set at H2 (12,800 equivalent). The results are a set of really nasty, oversaturated and grimy red and black photos. Well, they were until I converted them to black and white, since, let’s face it, the world doesn’t need any more oversaturated red and black concert photos.

Zebras show tonight
The Zebras are playing a show tonight with the Czarbles and Manic Zamboni at The Frequency. Rumor has it that this could be their only Madison, WI show (or show anywhere) for a very long time, and that’s a shame. They put on one of the best shows in town. I for one will miss seeing them every month or so if its true.

Del! and Bukue One free show March 27th!
So, if anyone is still searching for something to do tomorrow night, Del the Funky Homosapien (above) and Bukue One are playing a free show at the Majestic Theatre with locals Rob DZ and Weapons of Mass Defunktion.
If you missed the show last May at The High Noon Saloon, here’s a recap from A.V. Club Madison and one from right here.
If you haven’t seen Bukue One (below) or Rob DZ before, I recommend you get there early. Hell, get there early anyway. It’s free and will probably fill up fast.
If you’ve never heard Del! or Bukue, do yourself a favor and download some of their music on Bandcamp for free.
Del’s Bandcamp (I suggest checkin’ out Funk Man as a good starting point.)
Bukue One’s Bandcamp (Laser Reyes Vol. 1 is great for dance parties!)

Cee Know and CFO
Cee Know and CFO, originally uploaded by joeybaltimore.
One of three photos I will be exhibiting at Secret Ingredient Art Collective’s The Art of Love + Hate show at The Inferno on Friday, Feb. 12.
See anything else in my photo collection that would fit a theme of Love + Hate? Let me know, I’m bad at picking pieces for shows.

Sweet redemption
Earlier this year, The Queers stopped through Madison and played a show at The Frequency. There was a bunch of confusion as to online and early ticket sales, mostly on my part, and I didn’t end up going because it had sold out quite soon after they were released.
Once summer came I was listening to The Leftovers new Eager To Please album quite a bit, and even had a chance to see them at Gnarly House in town with The Transgressions, so when they announced on their MySpace that they were doing a tour with The Queers this fall (and had a Madison show listed) I regained that excitement from seeing that first show listed.
That night I headed up to The Frequency to get tickets but nobody that was working had even heard that the show was happening at that point. So, a few months later, after checking on tickets quite a few times, I had a pair in my hand and was ready to go.
The Transgressions had a sound check with the back room already full of people. After a while, sound check done and new drinks in hand, they took to the stage, playing the most aggressive set of the night (if you can consider any form of pop punk aggressive).
On second were The Leftovers, who, although they’re based out of Portland, ME, feel like a hometown band they’ve played here so much this year.
The Leftovers played a stellar set of bubblegum punk akin to The Queers Don’t Back Down album (swap the sarcasm for more songs about girls, though) meets some classic Cars or Elvis Costello. Always a good time and I’d recommend catching them next time they come to your town. Especially when one of the band members is celebrating a birthday. Lot’s of good-natured teasing on stage.
Finally The Queers came out and played quite a full set of their poppiest tunes. They had the crowd bouncing and dancing around (and that’s a feat in itself for Madison) while handily combining two parts Beach Boys with one part Ramones for everyone’s thirsty ears.
All in all, this was the exact remedy needed for the foot and a half that fell in town the day before, the temperature being around zero, and a distinct lack of decent lineups at shows of the recent past.

Another packed night at Mickey’s Tavern
The Peaking Lights graced Mickey’s Tavern for the first time in a while on November 28th. They brought out their friends from Minneapolis, Daughters of the Sun, to play the show also.
It was a great night of experimental music for Madison with drum sets and various electronics littering half of the front room and forcing the normal sardine can feel of Mickey’s into something that felt more like 8AM Monday morning on the CTA train.

Hey! You! What’s all that racket?
A year or two ago, a handful of friends started talking about The Hussy. I told them it wasn’t true. There wasn’t such a creature. I tried to see them with my own eyes only to be let down each and every time… Sometimes due to my own lack of owning a timepiece that tells the correct hour, other times caused by the lackadaisical meanderings some Madisonians call driving, and occasionally due to the beasts lightning fast appearances or non-appearances. The closest my hunt has gotten me so far was to a pit-stained white deep-v-neck (those idiotic ones that American Apparel sells as “hip”) with a crude attempt at stenciling The Hussy on the front. It was found in the rain outside of the Wisco, one place I’ve expected to unexpectedly run into the monster for ages.
But, unexpectedly I was out at Mickeys after the USoT show at the Union and finally got to end my hunt. It was a good, neigh, energetically sweaty good time. And I tried to get some good photos, I really did, but Mickey’s just isn’t the place to move around in with camera on a night light such. So, not a lot of good photos, I would only post the two above except that the lack of moving led to a lot of shots from the same angle… And bang, I went and busted out flash to give those not-so-good pics a new life in the shaky video below. Hope you enjoy! (the photos and the “overly descriptive journalist schlock to fill space because they have not a lot to say writing style”)
